At the professional level, over 470 men have been head coaches since the founding of the NFL. Today's head coach devotes long hours to tactics and playbooks, plus oversees the offensive and defensive coordinators, plus the many position coaches. He must hold weekly press conferences, and is responsible for a proper locker room atmosphere. Teams often take on the personality of the head coach. Head coaching, due to the lack of job security and long hours, is a very stressful job, and most careers are short. Only the quarterback and head coach are credited with win-loss records. The success of the coach is measured by his victories. If a coach does not produce winning teams, he does not have a long career in the NFL. As of the 2015 season, only 95 coaches, about 20%, have won 50 or more games.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Coaching Totals )〕 At the time of the 1970 NFL-AFL merger, George Halas held the record for most regular-season wins as a head coach. Halas had four stints as coach of the Bears. He retired after the 1967 season with 318 wins. Twenty-eight years later, Halas was surpassed by Don Shula. Shula retired at the end of the 1995 season, amassing 328 regular season wins. Hall of Famer Guy Chamberlin holds the record for the highest winning percentage among coaches with at least 50 wins at 78.4%. Only five of the coaches on this list won over 70% of their games. Dan Reeves, while he won 190 games, has lost the most NFL games - 165. Bill Belichick has the most wins among active coaches. ==Coaches with 50 or more wins== This sortable table shows the top NFL coaches in order of regular season wins.
